The latest 2026 Times Higher Education (THE) University Rankings have revealed the top-performing universities in Nigeria, highlighting institutions that excel in teaching, research, industry engagement, and international outlook.
The rankings assess universities using globally recognised standards and provide insights into how Nigerian institutions compare both nationally and internationally.
10. University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN)
Founded in 1955 by Nigeria’s first President, Nnamdi Azikiwe, the University of Nigeria, Nsukka remains one of the country’s most respected universities. Despite dropping from 7th place in 2024 to 10th in 2026, UNN continues to maintain a strong academic reputation with over 45,000 students across its campuses.
9. University of Jos (UNIJOS)
The University of Jos made a notable entry into the top 10 rankings in 2026. Established as a satellite campus of the University of Ibadan in 1971 before gaining autonomy in 1975, the institution now serves more than 37,000 students.
8. University of Ilorin (UNILORIN)
Known for its stable academic calendar and consistent performance, the University of Ilorin ranked 8th in 2026, down from 6th position in 2024. The institution has nearly 48,500 students and remains one of Nigeria’s most respected federal universities.
