Washington, D.C. — A member of the United States House of Representatives, John James, has called on the Nigerian government to ensure that all legal proceedings involving Nnamdi Kanu comply with constitutional protections and internationally recognized human rights standards.
The appeal was made through a congressional resolution drawing attention to the ongoing prosecution of Kanu, who leads the Indigenous People of Biafra (Indigenous People of Biafra). The U.S. lawmaker stressed the importance of due process, fair hearing, and humane treatment in line with both Nigerian law and global human rights obligations.
In the resolution, James urged Nigerian authorities to ensure that all judicial actions in Kanu’s case respect the country’s constitution, particularly provisions guaranteeing fair trial rights, access to legal representation, and protection from arbitrary detention.
He also referenced international human rights frameworks, encouraging Nigeria to align its handling of the matter with established global legal standards.
Nnamdi Kanu has been a central figure in the separatist movement advocating for the independence of Biafra. He was re-arrested in 2021 and has since faced multiple charges related to terrorism and treason.
His case has continued to attract international attention, particularly over concerns raised by human rights groups regarding the circumstances of his arrest, detention conditions, and trial proceedings.
Kanu remains one of the most closely watched political detainees in Nigeria’s recent legal history, with proceedings drawing commentary from both domestic and international observers.
As of the time of filing this report, the Nigerian government had not issued an official response to the U.S. lawmaker’s statement.
