Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC), Dr. Kayode Opeifa, has reaffirmed the corporation’s zero-tolerance policy on drug abuse and illicit trafficking, warning that the nation’s railway corridors will not be used for criminal activities.
Opeifa stated this on Friday, 26 June 2026, in a message marking the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, with the theme: “NRC Reiterates Commitment to a Drug-Free, Safe Railway.”
He said the corporation was reinforcing its anti-drug campaign through strategic collaboration with the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), the Nigerian Railway Police Force and staff unions to safeguard railway operations.
The NRC boss said drug abuse poses a serious threat to railway safety, stressing that its consequences extend beyond public health to security and operational efficiency.
“As the Corporation responsible for moving millions of Nigerians and transporting critical goods across the country, we recognize that drug abuse is more than a public health concern. It is a serious safety, security and operational risk. On the railway, a single moment of impaired judgment can have devastating consequences,” he said.
He maintained that the corporation would continue to enforce its zero-tolerance policy across train corridors, stations, workshops and other operational facilities.
“The Nigerian Railway Corporation maintains a zero-tolerance policy on drug abuse and illicit trafficking across all train corridors, stations, workshops and operational facilities,”Opeifa declared.
He said the NRC would intensify public enlightenment through awareness campaigns, education and counselling programmes for employees and host communities to curb substance abuse and promote a safer railway environment.
The Managing Director also assured members of staff battling substance abuse of confidential support, saying the corporation remained committed to rehabilitation alongside enforcement.
“Staff members struggling with substance use are encouraged to access our confidential support channels. Seeking help is a sign of strength and responsibility,”he stated.
Opeifa further urged passengers, railway workers and members of the public to remain vigilant and promptly report suspicious activities, insisting that securing the railway network requires collective responsibility.
“We urge passengers, staff and members of the public to report any suspicious activities. Railway safety is everyone’s responsibility,” he said.
He called on Nigerians to reject drug abuse and embrace responsible conduct in support of a safer railway system and national development.
“Choose life over drugs. Choose safety over risk. Together, we will keep the Nigerian Railway safe, secure, drug-free and on track for national development,” Opeifa added.
