Real Madrid have confirmed the signing of Portuguese midfielder Bernardo Silva on a free transfer following his exit from Manchester City.

The 31-year-old has signed a two-year contract with the Spanish giants, where he will reunite with manager José Mourinho ahead of the new season.

Silva chooses Real Madrid despite rival interest

Silva brings an end to a highly successful nine-year spell at Manchester City, during which he won multiple domestic and European honours and established himself as one of the Premier League’s standout midfielders.

The Portugal international had attracted interest from several top clubs, including Barcelona and Atletico Madrid, but ultimately opted for a move to the Santiago Bernabéu.

Silva becomes Real Madrid’s second major addition of the summer after the arrival of Marc Cucurella from Chelsea in a deal worth £52 million.

Real Madrid continue squad rebuild

The move comes as Los Blancos look to strengthen their squad after a disappointing campaign that saw them finish eight points behind Barcelona in La Liga and exit the UEFA Champions League at the quarter-final stage.

Silva is currently representing Portugal at the 2026 FIFA World Cup and is expected to play a key role in their bid for international success.

Real Madrid remain active in the transfer market, with reports linking the club to Inter Milan full-back Denzel Dumfries and former Liverpool defender Ibrahima Konaté.

Meanwhile, veteran defender Antonio Rüdiger recently committed his future to the club by signing a contract extension until 2027.
