Osun Security Scandal: Adeleke Says Previously Purchased Drones Cannot Be Found

Osogbo, Nigeria — Governor Ademola Adeleke of Osun State has announced plans to acquire new security drones to strengthen surveillance and intelligence gathering across the state, revealing that five drones reportedly purchased by the previous administration are missing.

The governor made the disclosure during a recent security review meeting held in Osogbo, where the state government assessed the operational capacity of security agencies amid rising concerns over kidnapping, banditry, and other criminal activities in parts of the state.

According to a statement issued by the spokesperson to the governor, Mallam Olawale Rasheed, records available to the current administration showed that five security drones were procured and fully paid for under the administration of former Governor Gboyega Oyetola. However, the devices could not be located after the Adeleke administration assumed office in November 2022.

The statement further alleged that another security-related project valued at approximately ₦300 million, intended to link the state security communication centre with Armoured Personnel Carriers (APCs), was also left uncompleted despite funds allegedly being committed to the contract.

Governor Adeleke expressed concern over the development, stating that his administration remains committed to improving the security architecture of Osun State rather than dwelling on past controversies.

“We are focused on ensuring the safety of lives and property across Osun State. The acquisition of modern surveillance drones and other security equipment will enhance intelligence gathering and support security agencies in tackling criminal activities effectively,” the governor reportedly said.

The government also disclosed that some abandoned security vehicles linked to previous contracts had been recovered and refurbished for operational use.

The planned drone acquisition is part of broader efforts by the Adeleke administration to boost surveillance around border communities and areas considered vulnerable to attacks by criminal elements operating within the South-West region.
