A Magistrate Court sitting in Bolade, Oshodi, Lagos State, has sentenced 13 individuals to three months’ imprisonment for illegally dumping refuse in unauthorized locations across the state.
The conviction followed their arrest by operatives of the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps (LAGESC), popularly known as the KAI Brigade, during routine environmental enforcement operations aimed at curbing indiscriminate waste disposal.
According to the Lagos State Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, the offenders were apprehended while violating the state’s environmental sanitation laws. The suspects were subsequently arraigned before the court, where they were found guilty and sentenced accordingly.
Wahab said the convictions underscore the Lagos State Government’s commitment to enforcing environmental regulations and maintaining a cleaner and healthier environment for residents.
He warned that indiscriminate waste disposal poses serious environmental and public health risks, stressing that the government would continue to prosecute individuals and businesses found violating sanitation laws.
The commissioner urged residents to make use of approved waste disposal channels and patronize licensed waste management operators to avoid sanctions.
