Governor Alex Otti of Abia State has unveiled an ambitious plan to make the state fully independent of Nigeria’s national electricity grid, pledging uninterrupted power supply across all parts of the state in the coming years.
Speaking on Monday at the Invest Lagos forum, Otti said his administration is working towards taking complete control of electricity generation and distribution within Abia, with the goal of guaranteeing 24-hour power supply for residents and businesses.
According to the governor, reliable electricity remains a critical factor for economic growth, noting that energy accounts for between 60 and 70 percent of manufacturing costs.
“What we want to do in Abia State is to have power in our own hands. In time to come, the entire Abia State will be disconnected from the national grid, and 24-hour electricity supply will be guaranteed across every part of the state,” Otti said.
The governor disclosed that the state’s growing reputation for stable electricity is already attracting investors. He revealed that a steel plant owner recently contacted him about relocating operations to a state with guaranteed power supply.
“I got a call from someone yesterday who already owns a steel plant and wants to relocate it to a state with 24-hour electricity. I told him to come immediately. I have already allocated 5,000 hectares of land to him close to Geometric,” he added.
Otti said the move aligns with his administration’s broader industrialization agenda, aimed at positioning Abia as a preferred destination for manufacturing and large-scale investments.
The governor expressed confidence that stable electricity would significantly reduce production costs, attract more industries, create jobs, and accelerate economic development across the state.
