The kidnappers holding dozens of pupils and teachers abducted from schools in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State have reportedly demanded a ₦1 billion ransom and the implementation of Sharia law as conditions for the release of the victims.
The victims were kidnapped during coordinated attacks on schools in Ahoro-Esinle and Yawota communities in May 2026. Reports indicate that armed men stormed the schools, abducting dozens of pupils and teachers while creating panic among residents.
Sources familiar with the ongoing negotiations disclosed that the abductors have established contact with community leaders and intermediaries, presenting a list of demands that reportedly includes a huge ransom payment and the adoption of Sharia law in the affected communities.
As of the time of filing this report, security agencies and the Oyo State Government have not officially confirmed the reported demands. However, efforts to secure the safe release of the victims are said to be ongoing.
The incident has generated widespread concern across the country, with parents, teachers, civil society groups, and education stakeholders calling on authorities to intensify rescue operations and ensure the victims are returned safely.
The abduction has also renewed fears over the growing insecurity affecting schools and rural communities in different parts of Nigeria. Many observers have expressed concern that schoolchildren continue to remain vulnerable despite repeated government assurances on improving security around educational institutions.
Meanwhile, residents of the affected communities have appealed to both the state and federal governments to act swiftly to prevent further loss of lives and ensure the safe return of the kidnapped pupils and teachers.
