Police detain six officers over viral assault video in Imo

The Imo state police command has detained six police officers captured in a viral video allegedly assaulting a young man in Ikeduru LGA.

The command announced the development in a statement issued on Wednesday by DSP Henry Okoye, its spokesperson following widespread reactions to the footage circulating on social media.

According to the police, preliminary findings traced the incident to June 22, 2026, at Nduhobokwe community in Uzoagba, Ikeduru LGA.

The officers identified in connection with the incident are Inspector Ugochukwu Ibe, Inspector Nwachi Chimezie, Sergeant Ugoezuhu Austin, Corporal Michael Obi, Corporal Ebuka Onwuegbu and Corporal Amos Sunny.

The command disclosed that the officers have been placed in custody while disciplinary proceedings commence in line with regulations guiding the Nigeria Police Force.

Audu Garba Bosso, commissioner of police in the state has directed a comprehensive investigation to determine the circumstances surrounding the alleged assault and establish individual responsibilities.

According to the statement, the conduct displayed in the video falls short of the ethical and professional standards expected of police personnel.

The command stressed that the actions allegedly carried out by the officers do not reflect the core values of the Nigeria Police Force, reaffirming its commitment to professionalism, accountability and the protection of citizens’ rights.

Police authorities assured members of the public that the investigation would be conducted fairly and transparently, adding that the outcome of both the probe and disciplinary measures would be made public upon conclusion.
