Police probe killing of university student by suspected robbers

The Ogun State Police Command says it has commenced investigation into the killing of a student of the Olabisi Onabanjo University (OOU), Ago-Iwoye, who was allegedly shot by suspected armed robbers in the early hours of Thursday.

The spokesperson of the command and a Deputy Superintendent of Police, DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi, stated this in an interview.

Speaking with newsmen in Abeokuta on Thursday, Babaseyi explained that police operatives responded promptly to the incident and had launched a manhunt for the fleeing suspects.

The police spokesperson commiserated with the family of the deceased and the OOU community, assuring them that investigations were ongoing to bring the perpetrators to justice.

Meanwhile, the management of the institution had declared the day lecture-free following the killing of the student during the robbery incident.

Niyi Oduwole, Deputy Registrar, Corporate Affairs Division of the institution, made this known in a statement on Thursday.

According to Oduwole, the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Ayodeji Agboola, said the decision, approved by the Senate, was announced to allow students to mourn their late colleague.

He said the management had commiserated with the deceased’s family and assured students of enhanced security through collaboration with relevant security agencies to protect lives and property.

He also urged students to remain calm, avoid actions capable of escalating tension, and assured them of the university’s support during the period of mourning.
