“Politics has now become a dumping ground for people who swim in the pool of illusions” – Rita Edochie laments

Nollywood actress Rita Edochie has lamented over the state of politics in Nigeria.

She expressed sadness at how politics has been badly degraded, and now anything and everything can come out to contest, even with nothing to offer.

She noted that when Nigeria was still Nigeria, every contestant had a concrete evaluation and had to be equal to the task. But today, anyone can contest for office, regardless of competence, vision, or what they have to offer the people.

She pondered on when politics became a dumping ground for people who swim in the pool of illusions.

“Politics has been badly degraded; anything and everything can now come out to contest, even with nothing to offer, Alu Mee!

You no get integrity and captivity, so hide your face biko.

When Nigeria was Nigeria, every contestant had to have a concrete evaluation and must be equal to the task before coming out to contest for any small political office. I am not talking about a governship, just a small local government position. You must be thoroughly evaluated and eligible.

But today, almost anyone can run for office, regardless of competence, vision, or what they have to offer the people.
Public office is now treated as an open stage for anyone and everyone, including those with neither the capacity nor the character, nor the genuine solutions needed, to serve the people.

I don’t know when politics became a dumping ground for people who swim in the pool of illusions.
Everybody wants to make him face show and make him shoe shine.

I’ve just been seeing things, and I can only laugh. Though we are still waiting for the freedom of the people in captivity, and I say it is well, since a saying has it that we should give thanks no matter the situation. If you believe it in respect to the situation of Nigeria today”.

Jude Okoye had made a strong case for using a Bachelor’s degree as a prerequisite for running for political office in Nigeria. The elder brother of Psquare said Nigeria can’t have the uneducated leading the educated, as it makes zero sense.

Israel DMW spoke on elections in Nigeria, noting that winning an election in Nigeria isn’t determined by popular opinion on social media but by the highest number of votes cast on election day. He said he would rather pick a waybill for a friend in Warri than to vote for APC in 2027.

In a previous post, he wrote a message to Nigerians admonishing them to wait until they were announced as winners at any election. He stated that one should learn to concede defeat and accept whoever has been announced as the winner.

His post came after the Apex court dismissed Edo State gubernatorial candidate, Asue Ighodalo’s petition to annul Monday Okpebholor’s declaration as the winner of the September 2023 election, because it lacked merit.
