Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, has assured that the Federal Government’s planned evacuation of Nigerians affected by ongoing attacks and tensions in South Africa remains on course.
Speaking on the development, the minister explained that the delay in the repatriation process was due to documentation and screening procedures being carried out by South African authorities before affected Nigerians can be cleared for travel.
“The repatriation is on course. Mr. President himself has reiterated the fact that this aircraft must come to South Africa and our citizens who are imperiled will have the chance of getting on this aircraft to be brought back to their country,” she said.
According to Odumegwu-Ojukwu, the number of Nigerians seeking to return home continues to increase as both countries work through verification and clearance procedures.
She disclosed that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu directed the immediate establishment of a crisis response unit at Nigeria’s Consulate in Johannesburg and the Nigerian Mission in Pretoria to coordinate assistance for affected citizens.
The minister also dismissed claims that Nigerians being targeted in South Africa are illegal migrants, insisting that many of them are legitimate residents and business owners whose properties have been looted or destroyed.
“That is absolutely untrue. Citizens are being harassed. Their properties are being looted. Criminal actions are perpetrated on our citizens,” she stated.
Expressing disappointment over the treatment of Nigerians, Odumegwu-Ojukwu recalled Nigeria’s role in supporting South Africa during the anti-apartheid struggle and stressed that the current situation is deeply concerning.
She further revealed that the possibility of retaliatory measures has not been ruled out, although any decision on such action would be taken at the highest level of government.
The minister added that consultations and coordination with relevant agencies are ongoing as authorities continue efforts to ensure the safety and possible return of affected Nigerians.
