Over 500 shanties, illegal shops, and dilapidated buildings in Nnewi have been marked for demolition by the Ministry of Physical Planning and Urban Development.
Commissioner Barr. Chijioke Oseloka Ojukwu led the exercise along Onitsha Road, Nkwo axis, Post Office, and other locations. Affected structures include shops under high-tension lines, unapproved buildings, filling stations, hotels, and unstable houses.
Owners have 2 weeks to vacate. Demolition starts in 2-3 weeks, beginning with the Nnewi Triangle area to clear way for the abandoned Nnewi Mall, a central bus terminal, and a recreational center.
“Urban regeneration comes with pain, but it’s for the public good. It’s no longer business as usual. Everyone must comply with the law,” Ojukwu said.
This is part of Governor Soludo’s urban renewal master plan for Nnewi.
