The Rivers State Police Command has removed the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) in charge of Oyigbo Division following allegations of extortion involving the sum of ₦500,000, pending the outcome of an internal investigation.
The action was taken after a complaint surfaced accusing the officer of unlawfully collecting money from a resident under questionable circumstances. The allegation reportedly gained attention after details of the incident were circulated, prompting public concern and calls for accountability.
In response, the State Police Command ordered the immediate removal of the DPO from office to ensure a transparent and impartial investigation into the matter. Authorities said the decision was part of efforts to uphold discipline within the force and reinforce public trust in law enforcement operations.
A spokesperson for the Command confirmed that the officer has been relieved of his duties pending investigation, adding that appropriate disciplinary procedures will be followed if the allegations are substantiated.
The Command further assured members of the public that it remains committed to addressing misconduct within its ranks and ensuring that officers found guilty of abuse of power are held accountable.
Meanwhile, the investigation into the allegation is ongoing, and no final determination has been made regarding the officer’s culpability.
