Saraki Accuses Kwara Government of Harassment Over Defamation Suit

Ilorin, Kwara State – Former Senate President, Abubakar Bukola Saraki, has accused the Kwara State Government of harassment and political intimidation following a criminal defamation suit instituted against him over comments allegedly made about Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq.

The legal dispute stems from statements reportedly published on social media by Saraki, in which he questioned the educational qualifications of the Kwara State Governor. The state government subsequently filed criminal defamation charges, alleging that the remarks were false, damaging to the governor’s reputation, and capable of inciting public unrest.

At a recent hearing before the Kwara State High Court in Ilorin, the prosecution sought a bench warrant against Saraki for his alleged failure to appear before the court. However, Saraki’s legal team contested the application, arguing that issues surrounding the service of court processes and the court’s jurisdiction must first be resolved.

In a statement issued through his media office, Saraki described the lawsuit as an attempt by the state government to silence opposition voices and suppress democratic engagement. He maintained that the case was politically motivated and formed part of a broader campaign to intimidate critics of the current administration.

According to Saraki, public officials should be open to scrutiny and criticism in a democratic society. He also urged the state government to focus on addressing pressing challenges affecting residents rather than pursuing legal action against political opponents.

The Kwara State Government, however, insists that the matter is purely a legal issue and not politically driven. Officials argue that individuals must be held accountable for statements they make in public, especially when such remarks are alleged to be defamatory.

The court adjourned the case until July 3, 2026, when it is expected to hear preliminary objections raised by Saraki’s legal team and determine the next course of action.
