Nottingham Forest striker Taiwo Awoniyi has revealed that personal matters were behind his decision to withdraw from the Super Eagles squad for the 2026 Unity Cup and the upcoming international friendlies against Poland and Portugal.
Awoniyi had been expected to join Eric Chelle’s squad during the June international window but was notably absent from Nigeria’s successful Unity Cup campaign in London, where the Super Eagles retained the trophy.
Awoniyi clears the air on absence
Addressing speculation surrounding his absence, the 28-year-old clarified that his decision was unrelated to football and was based entirely on personal commitments.
“I was supposed to be in the Super Eagles camp, but I opted out because of personal reasons I have to attend to,” Awoniyi said.
The striker also expressed confidence in the quality of players available to the national team, insisting that Nigeria’s strength in depth ensured his absence would not affect the squad.
“We have lots of talents in the Super Eagles, so for me, everyone that is in the team for the June friendlies is as good as me,” he added.
Super Eagles thrive without Forest striker
Awoniyi’s explanation comes after Nigeria enjoyed an impressive international window under Chelle.
The Super Eagles secured a 2-0 victory over Zimbabwe in the Unity Cup semi-final before defeating Jamaica 3-0 in the final to successfully defend their title.
The former Union Berlin forward ended the club season in strong form with Nottingham Forest, overcoming injury setbacks to make a significant impact during the closing stages of the campaign.
Awoniyi remains in contention
Awoniyi last featured for Nigeria in October 2024 during a 1-0 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying victory over Libya.
Since then, injuries and fierce competition for places have limited his opportunities with the national team.
However, with the striker back to full fitness and performing consistently at club level, he remains a strong contender for future Super Eagles call-ups as Nigeria continue preparations for upcoming international assignments.
