“The first duty of a husband is not to love his wife”- Nigerians React as Pastor Redefines Role of a Husband in Marriage

A Nigerian cleric, Bisi Adewale, has generated widespread reactions online after stating that a husband’s most important responsibility in marriage is not financial provision or emotional love, but spiritual leadership.

Speaking in a viral video circulating on social media, the pastor explained that many men prioritize providing for their families while neglecting their spiritual responsibility.

“The first duty of a man in marriage is not to provide. The first duty of a man in marriage is not to love his wife,” he said.

Adewale emphasized that a husband must first function as the “priest of the family,” arguing that spiritual alignment with God determines how well a man can love his wife and lead his home.

He warned that neglecting spiritual leadership could negatively affect marital relationships.

“If you love your wife without loving God, very soon you will be wicked to that woman because you won’t even know how to love her,” he stated.

He added that such love could become selfish and emotionally harmful within marriage. ‘Seek God first’

Referencing biblical teaching, he urged men to prioritize their relationship with God as a foundation for marriage.

“Seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness, and every other thing shall be added,” he said.

He concluded that marriage is one of the blessings that follow a spiritually grounded life, stating, “Marriage is other things added.”
