As the United States commemorates 250 years of independence in 2026, the nation looks back at the statesmen, soldiers and thinkers who led the American Revolution and created the institutions of the republic. Among the many figures who shaped the country’s early years, seven stand above the rest.

George Washington: The indispensable leader | He commanded the Continental Army during the Revolution, presided over the Constitutional Convention and became the first President of the United States. His leadership helped establish many of the precedents that defined the presidency.

Thomas Jefferson: Voice of Liberty | Thomas Jefferson was the principal author of the Declaration of Independence and served as the nation’s third president. He expanded the young republic through the Louisiana Purchase and helped define America’s founding ideals.

John Adams: Champion of Independence | A key advocate for independence, John Adams helped secure French support during the Revolutionary War. He later became the first vice-president and second president of the United States, defending constitutional government.

Benjamin Franklin: Statesman and Diplomat | A scientist, inventor and publisher, Franklin became one of America’s most influential figures. His diplomatic efforts helped secure support for the Revolution and contributed to the Constitution.

Alexander Hamilton: Architect of Finance | Alexander Hamilton was Washington’s trusted aide during the Revolution and later the first Treasury secretary. He created the national bank and public credit system, laying the foundations of the federal government’s finances.

James Madison: Father of the Constitution | James Madison played a central role in drafting the Constitution and co-authored The Federalist Papers. As the fourth president, he also championed the Bill of Rights, helping shape the nation’s governing framework.

James Monroe: Guardian of the Republic | James Monroe served as a Revolutionary War veteran, diplomat and fifth president of the United States. His administration advanced the Monroe Doctrine, asserting American influence across the hemisphere.
