Three children have been killed in a car crash in North Carolina after their mother accelerated to speeds of 111mph to evade a police traffic stop, according to reports.
In affidavits seen by WBTV, Megan Symone Scott is accused of fleeing along Highway 53 in Fayetteville on June 3 in a 2018 Kia Forte, in which her three sons were passengers.
A GoFundMe account set up by family members to raise funeral expenses for the boys has named them as Jae’ Coda Thomas, three, Ju’ Mari Thomas, six, and Jack Thomas, eight.
“Our family is heartbroken after the tragic loss of our three beloved grandchildren,” the appeal said. “The pain and grief we are experiencing is unimaginable, and we are struggling to find the strength to move forward.”
The 31-year-old mother now faces a series of charges including three counts of involuntary manslaughter. Per WBTV, three affidavits set out how the events unfolded in the run up to the deadly crash.
The first alleges that Scott had gotten into an argument with her boyfriend earlier in the day, causing her to bite him on the forearm while driving.
According to the outlet it describes the boyfriend exiting the car, at which point Scott allegedly tried to run him over, only for the man to leap onto the hood and be thrown clear.
The second says North Carolina Highway Patrol subsequently pulled Scott over to question her about the boyfriend incident, only for her to allegedly speed off and hit two officers as she did so.
The final affidavit states that Scott, driving at high speed, then crossed the center line of the highway, overcorrected and careered off the right hand side of Cedar Creek Road, hitting a tree head-on at around 10:50 p.m.
Scott and two of the boys were thrown from the vehicle, with the children dying at the scene. A third boy was rescued from the wreck and airlifted to UNC Medical Center in Chapel Hill, only to pass away from his injuries in the emergency room.
Sara Wallace, who lives near the crash site, told ABC 11 she had heard “the speed, the thud, and then silence… There was no squealing, there was no braking, there was no crying, there was no sound. And then. Shortly thereafter, all the sirens.”
Scott was treated at Cape Fear Valley Medical Center and arrested two weeks later on June 15.
The accused has been held in Cumberland County Detention Center since her arrest but appeared in court on June 18 where she was denied bail and appointed a public defender.
