The U.S. State Department says it is actively working to help the mother of Cape Verde goalkeeper Vozinha travel to the United States after the player revealed she was unable to attend his team’s historic World Cup debut against Spain.
Following Cape Verde’s stunning 0-0 draw with the European champions, Vozinha said he wished his mother could have been in the stands to witness the biggest match of his career.
U.S. officials say relatives of World Cup players are exempt from visa bond requirements and are now reaching out to assist his family with the visa process.
The 40-year-old goalkeeper became an overnight sensation after making seven saves against Spain, helping Cape Verde secure one of the biggest results in the nation’s football history.
