UPM Hails Olopade Over FG-Approved Muda Lawal Stadium Rehabilitation

The United Premier Movement has commended the Director-General of the National Sports Commission, Bukola Olopade, for facilitating Federal Government approval for the rehabilitation of the long-abandoned Muda Lawal Stadium in Abeokuta, Ogun State.

The group said Olopade played a pivotal role in drawing government attention to the deteriorating state of the historic stadium, leading to plans for its upgrade and modernisation.

In a statement signed by its Convener, Chief Olalekan Shoyinka, and made available through its Assistant Secretary, Sheriff Adenekan, UPM described the development as a major milestone in efforts to revive sports infrastructure in Ogun State.

The movement noted that the intervention underscored Olopade’s commitment to grassroots development, particularly in the areas of youth empowerment, sports growth and community advancement.

According to the statement, the rehabilitation of the stadium goes beyond sports, describing it as a project with significant economic and social benefits.

It stated, “The approval for the rehabilitation of the historic stadium is not merely a sports project but a far-reaching developmental intervention that will positively impact youths, athletes, coaches and small-scale businesses.

“It will also restore Abeokuta’s status as a key sporting hub in Nigeria.”

UPM lamented that the stadium, named after late Nigerian football legend Muda Lawal, had suffered years of neglect despite its importance to the country’s sporting history.

The group described the planned revamp as timely, adding that it would help reposition Ogun State as a destination for sporting activities and talent development.

Shoyinka further said Olopade’s role in the project reflected purposeful leadership and a commitment to public service.

“True leadership is measured by impact. Olopade has demonstrated a consistent focus on initiatives that directly benefit the people rather than personal interests,” he said.

The group also commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the Federal Government for prioritising sports development, noting that investment in such infrastructure could boost youth engagement, national unity and economic growth.

UPM expressed optimism that, upon completion, the upgraded facility would meet international standards and attract major competitions, while nurturing a new generation of athletes.

It also urged stakeholders to ensure the timely execution and proper maintenance of the project to maximise its long-term benefits.
