While one student was buried the previous week, nine others were interred in emotional send-offs on Saturday, June 13. The remaining five are set to be buried in the coming week.
The school’s principal attended the burial of one of the students, Nicole Mitchelle Muiruri, in Gathiga Gacheru village, Embu county, and spoke publicly for the first time since the tragic inferno.
What did Utumishi Girls Academy principal say after dorm fire?
Joycelyn Karanja expressed her pain and anguish over the tragedy and condoled with the families who lost their children.
She noted that it was difficult to explain what had happened, as everyone was still struggling to come to terms with the devastating loss.
“This is something that was done in secret. I want to say that this is very painful. I have lost daughters who had bright futures, dreams and a strong sense of purpose,” she said.
Karanja noted that most of the students who perished in the fire were top performers, highly disciplined and, in some cases, the only children in their families.
“I have been asking God to give us a revelation in due time so that we may understand why this happened to us. If God saved Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego from the fire, why was He not able to save my daughters? I can only say that there is something in store for the 16 families,” she stated.
The principal further encouraged the affected families, saying she too had been deeply affected because of the immense love and bond she shared with her students.
Similar scenes of sorrow, tears and grief from family members, classmates and friends of the students who perished were witnessed in Narok, Nakuru, Nandi, Kericho and Kajiado counties during the funerals.
Those laid to rest include Form Four student Purity Favour Naisula, Sheryl Ondari (Grade 10), Sallystine Wambui, Abigail Cheong’eno, Linah Juliet, Mercy Precious and Cecilia Wanjiku.
