- Survivor Joy Wanjiku demands justice for fire tragedy victims, calling for harsh punishment for the responsible students
- Joy’s friend Precious perished in the fire, highlighting the tragic impact on their school community
- Concerns raised about school safety standards, including lack of exits and emergency measures for students
Nakuru, Kenya: An Utumishi Girls Senior School fire tragedy survivor, Joy Wanjiku, has bitterly called out the girls who started the fire that caused many deaths; she now wants them to rot in jail.
Joy was among those who escaped unhurt, but sadly her friend Precious who was her encourager, helper, unifying factor and often helped her in maths, was not so lucky.
Flanked by both of her parents, the eloquent Joy travelled from Kahawa West, Nairobi, all the way to Nakuru to condole with Precious’ mum and family.
The Grade 10 student was categorical; she was very bitter with the students who caused the fire, as they were not remorseful of their actions even after realising all the damage and lives lost.

Utumishi Girls: Mixed reactions as Kenyans learn CCTV cameras were in girls’ dorms, lawyer weighs in
“Please let them rot in prison because after doing what they did they were not even remorseful, and some were crying because they lost their gloss. We have seen this in multiple schools and the girls were only imprisoned for five years, what is that?”she posed.
“Some people had been sent home for school fees and sickness, and most people were in school. About the matron, I did not know where she was. I was happy that she moved the fridge and gas because we would have blown up and my classmate said she helped some people,” she added.
How was the situation in Utumishi dorms?
Young Joy also took issue with the government and education stakeholders because of some of the structures that house the students and congestion in schools.
“Cube 12 didn’t have windows and only exit doors, which had been closed with wood; the room had been converted to a cube because of congestion; the girls would have been alive if there more exit points,” she said.
“You should go back and restructure, install CCTV have more exit points, fire extinguishers, emergency exits, and large windows. Our school did not have any water when all that was happening; even though we wanted to help, we could not do anything,”she said.
