The Governing Council of Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University, Anambra State, has dismissed five staff members, including two professors, over allegations of sexual abuse, harassment, intimidation, extortion and other forms of unethical conduct.
The decision was taken at the university’s 122nd Governing Council meeting held on June 12, 2026, according to a statement issued on Sunday in Awka by the institution’s Public Relations Officer, Harrison Madubueze.
Those affected include Prof. C.C. Nwabachili, immediate past Dean of the Faculty of Law; and Prof. Chike Osegbue of the Department of Political Science, Faculty of Social Sciences.
Others dismissed are Dr. I.H. Iheukwumere and Dr. Emeka Nwabunnia, both of the Department of Microbiology, Faculty of Natural Sciences, Uli Campus, as well as Mrs. Ifeoma Kakulu, a Principal Assistant Registrar who served as Examination Officer in the Faculty of Law.
The university said the affected staff were found culpable of various offences bordering on sexual misconduct, abuse of office, intimidation of students and colleagues, and financial extortion.
Madubueze said the Governing Council took the disciplinary action in line with its commitment to uphold ethical standards and restore confidence in the institution’s academic environment.
He added that the council reaffirmed its zero tolerance for actions capable of tarnishing the university’s image, warning that further breaches of conduct would attract strict sanctions.
According to him, the institution remains committed to building a safe, accountable and forward-looking academic community aligned with its vision of becoming a “now university and of the future.”
The dismissal marks one of the strongest disciplinary actions taken by the institution in recent years, amid growing concerns over misconduct and abuse of power in Nigerian tertiary institutions.
