Abuja, Nigeria — June 10, 2026. The Federal Ministry of Transportation and the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) have confirmed that five people, including an infant, lost their lives in the recent Warri–Itakpe train accident.
In a joint statement issued on Tuesday, the Ministry and the NRC disclosed that the fatalities comprised four adult passengers and one baby. The update follows ongoing assessments and rescue operations after the tragic incident involving the Warri–Itakpe Train Service.
According to the authorities, a total of 442 passengers were booked on the train at the time of the accident, while an additional 40 personnel, including crew members, security officers, and third-party service providers, were on board, bringing the total number of occupants to 482.
Preliminary findings revealed that four coaches overturned while another coach derailed during the incident. The accident left several passengers injured, with at least 24 people reportedly sustaining serious injuries. Medical teams and emergency responders have continued to provide treatment and support to affected victims.
The Ministry further stated that one NRC staff member suffered a traumatic limb injury but remains in stable condition. Several other passengers sustained varying degrees of injuries and have been receiving medical attention at designated healthcare facilities.
Emergency response teams, including personnel from the Delta State Government, the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), the Nigeria Police Force, and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), participated in rescue and evacuation efforts following the accident.
The Federal Ministry of Transportation and the NRC expressed their condolences to the families of the deceased and wished those receiving treatment a speedy recovery.
