World Cup: France target last-16 spot against Sweden

France will continue their quest for a third FIFA World Cup title when they face Sweden in the Round of 32 on Tuesday at the New York New Jersey Stadium.

Didier Deschamps’ side enter the knockout stage as one of the tournament favourites after winning all three group matches, while Sweden squeezed through as one of the eight best third-placed teams.

The French topped Group I with victories over Senegal, Iraq and Norway, scoring 10 goals and conceding four. Kylian Mbappé and Ousmane Dembélé have led the attack with four goals each, while Michael Olise has contributed three assists.

Deschamps warns against complacency

Despite France’s impressive form, coach Didier Deschamps has warned his players against underestimating Sweden.

“Sweden are not playing for their survival. Obviously, they will do everything to win the game, but they have nothing to lose.”

He added: “We need to stay humble, maintain our determination and concentration. In the group stage, winning the first game gave us some margin for error, but now we have no second chances.”

Sweden reached the knockout phase after finishing third in Group F with four points. They opened with a 5-1 win over Tunisia before suffering a heavy defeat to the Netherlands and drawing 1-1 with Japan.

Sweden eye another upset

Coach Graham Potter acknowledged the size of the challenge awaiting his side.

“We have to be as close to perfect as we can be. We know the quality of the opponent and we have full respect for that.”

Captain Victor Lindelöf believes Sweden are determined to extend their tournament.

“This is for many the first tournament with a tough journey to get as far as here. This is our World Cup adventure that’s at stake, and we don’t want that to end.”

France are expected to welcome William Saliba back into defence, although N’Golo Kanté remains doubtful and Marcus Thuram is unavailable through injury. Sweden will be without defender Isak Hien.

The winner of Tuesday’s tie will face Paraguay in the Round of 16 after Paraguay eliminated Germany on penalties.
