Xenophobia: 269 More Nigerians Evacuated From South Africa Arrive in Lagos

Another batch of 269 Nigerians evacuated from South Africa has arrived safely at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos, as the Federal Government continues its voluntary repatriation exercise amid rising xenophobic tensions.

The returnees arrived aboard an Air Peace flight from Johannesburg, making them the latest group brought home under the government’s evacuation programme. Earlier this month, 258 Nigerians were repatriated in the first batch, while another 66 returnees arrived on June 24 through a privately facilitated flight.

The evacuation comes as anti-immigration protests in South Africa have heightened fears among foreign nationals, prompting many Nigerians to opt for voluntary return. The Federal Government has also said it is working to document reported losses suffered by affected Nigerians and will engage the South African authorities on possible compensation.
