No fewer than 161 persons lost their lives in 415 road traffic crashes recorded across Ogun State between January and May 2026, the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Ogun State Command, has disclosed.
The Command’s Public Education Officer, Mr. Afolabi Odunsi, made this known in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Tuesday, 7 July, 2026 in Ota.
He said the crashes also left 1,007 persons with varying degrees of injuries during the five-month period.
Odunsi noted that the figures represent an improvement over the corresponding period in 2025, when the command recorded 494 crashes, 212 deaths and 1,121 injured persons.
According to him, the number of crashes dropped by 79, while fatalities declined by 51 and the number of injured victims reduced by 114.
He attributed the improvement to the command’s sustained public enlightenment campaigns aimed at educating motorists and other road users on road safety practices.
“This feat couldn’t have been achieved without the intensive public enlightenment campaign by FRSC personnel, educating the public on road safety measures,” he said.
Despite the improvement, Odunsi said violations of traffic regulations remained the major causes of road crashes in the state.
He identified speeding, driving under the influence of alcohol, dangerous overtaking, the use of mobile phones while driving, overloading and tyre bursts as some of the leading causes of the crashes.
The FRSC spokesman appealed to motorists to comply with traffic regulations to reduce avoidable road accidents and save lives.
“We are appealing to motorists to adhere strictly to traffic rules and regulations in order to prevent unnecessary loss of lives through road crashes,” he said.
Odunsi reaffirmed the command’s commitment to protecting lives and property through stricter enforcement of traffic laws and sustained public sensitisation across the state.
