2026 World Cup: How ‘Snicko’ helped Portugal eliminate Croatia

.
Croatia were denied a dramatic equaliser in the 13th minute of added time against Portugal when ‘Snickometer’ technology helped rule out Josko Gvardiol’s tap-in.

Sensors in the Trionda match ball mean it can detect even the slightest contact, similar to ‘Snicko’ in cricket, and relay the information to the VAR.

The technology showed an audio spike as the ball brushed the head of Igor Matanovic from Ivan Perisic’s cross which meant Mario Pasalic was in an offside position before Gvardiol turned in.

Croatia boss Zlatko Dalic said in his post-match press conference: “I will not comment much about it but I will say the refereeing was very bad.

“VAR kills emotions, it kills everything within you. We have gone too far with VAR.”

Portugal boss Roberto Martinez said: “It’s a shame one of the two teams had to lose.

“But there is no bad decision or lucky decision. It was a clear moment.”
