2027: Atiku appoints Kenneth Okonkwo as campaign spokesman

Atiku Abubakar, a former vice-president, has appointed Kenneth Okonkwo, Nollywood actor-turned-politician Kenneth Okonkwo as spokesperson for his 2027 presidential campaign under the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

The appointment was contained in a letter shared by Okonkwo on his verified X account on Thursday, confirming his new role following Atiku’s emergence as the ADC’s presidential candidate for the 2027 general election.

According to the letter, Atiku said the appointment was based on his confidence in Okonkwo’s communication skills, political judgment, integrity and ability to effectively represent the campaign’s positions before the public.

The former vice-president expressed optimism that Okonkwo would make meaningful contributions to the campaign and strengthen democratic engagement throughout the electioneering period.

Reacting to the appointment, Okonkwo thanked Atiku for the confidence reposed in him, describing the decision as evidence of the former vice-president’s commitment to dialogue and inclusive leadership.

He said discussions with Atiku and other leaders of the ADC had addressed issues affecting the South-East, adding that the concerns were considered within the framework of the Electoral Act 2026 and prevailing political realities.

Okonkwo also acknowledged the contributions of former ADC National Chairman Ralph Nwosu and Ekene Onwuka, Atiku’s Senior Special Assistant on Special Duties to the coalition-building process that led to his appointment.

He appealed to supporters to pray for wisdom, strength and protection as he assumes what he described as a demanding national assignment.

The appointment marks another major political move for Okonkwo, who served as spokesperson for Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi during the 2023 election.

His relationship with Obi later deteriorated, with both men becoming embroiled in a public dispute that has since spilled into the courts over alleged defamatory statements.

For Atiku, the 2027 contest represents another bid for Nigeria’s highest office, as the former vice-president seeks to secure the presidency after several unsuccessful attempts in previous election cycles.
