France have failed in their attempt to overturn the yellow card shown to Michael Olise during their FIFA World Cup Round of 16 victory over Paraguay.
Coach Didier Deschamps confirmed on Wednesday that FIFA had rejected the appeal, meaning the Bayern Munich winger remains one booking away from suspension.
Olise was cautioned in the closing stages of France’s ill-tempered clash with Paraguay in Philadelphia following an altercation with Matias Galarza.
“The yellow card has not changed. We were notified by FIFA this morning, it has been maintained,” Deschamps told reporters in Foxborough ahead of France’s quarter-final against Morocco at the Gillette Stadium.
Television replays appeared to show little contact between the two players after Olise placed his finger in front of his mouth before Galarza went to ground claiming he had been struck in the face.
With the booking upheld, Olise will miss a potential semi-final against Spain or Belgium if he is cautioned again in the quarter-final against Morocco.
Bradley Barcola and Manu Kone are also one booking away from suspension after both received yellow cards against Paraguay.
Deschamps also provided an update on midfielder Aurelien Tchouameni, who missed the Round of 16 victory because of a thigh injury.
“Aurelien is doing better. I can’t say more than that.
“He will maybe take part in training today but I will need to see. The others are all available,” he said.
