President Bola Tinubu has vowed that his administration will pursue justice for the pupils and teachers rescued after their abduction in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State, as well as for the family of Mr. Oyedokun, who was killed by the attackers.
Tinubu spoke on Friday while reacting to the successful rescue of the abductees after more than 50 days in captivity.
The President commended the military, the Department of State Services, DSS, and the Nigeria Police Force for their roles in the operation, describing the rescue as a major relief to the affected families and the country.
According to the Presidency, security agencies worked for 56 days to secure the release of the victims without collateral damage, while some of the suspected perpetrators were neutralised and eight others arrested. The Associated Press also reported that eight militants were arrested during the operation, while an unspecified number were killed.
“I am profoundly happy that our security forces successfully rescued the abducted pupils and teachers from Orire, Ogbomoso in Oyo State today after a military, police and intelligence-driven operation that neutralised some of the terrorists that perpetrated the evil act and the arrest of eight of them,” Tinubu said.
The President sympathised with the rescued pupils, their teachers, families and Nigerians over the trauma caused by the abduction.
He said the operation had ended a prolonged siege and restored hope to the affected families.
“This successful military operation has ended the siege and standoff of over 50 days and has brought relief to the entire nation and the affected families in particular.
“On behalf of the country, I express my gratitude to the officers and men of our armed forces, the intelligence agencies and the police for the safe rescue of the children and their teachers.
“My government will get justice for these children and their teachers and for the family of Mr Oyedokun, who the terrorists gruesomely murdered,” he said.
The abduction occurred in May when armed men invaded communities in Oriire Local Government Area near Ogbomoso, abducting pupils and teachers and killing at least one teacher during the attack.
Tinubu also commended the Oyo State Government for cooperating with the Federal Government throughout the rescue efforts.
He urged the state government to strengthen security around schools to prevent a recurrence of similar attacks.
The President further directed emergency agencies to work with the Oyo State Government to provide medical care and other necessary support to the rescued pupils and teachers.
The rescue brings to an end weeks of anxiety for the families of the abducted pupils and teachers, although full details of the operation and the condition of all the victims were yet to be released at the time of this report.
