Kidnapped Oyo Pupils, Teachers Regain Freedom After Weeks in Captivity

The pupils and teachers abducted from schools in the Oriire area of Oyo State have regained their freedom after weeks in captivity.

The Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, announced their release on Friday evening.

In a post on his X handle, Onanuga wrote: “Finally, all the kidnapped pupils and teachers in Oriire, Oyo, have been rescued by our security agencies.”

He accompanied the announcement with a video featuring the principal of one of the affected schools, Rachael Folawe Alamu, expressing gratitude to the security agencies for securing the victims’ release.

The victims were kidnapped on May 15 when heavily armed gunmen attacked schools in the Ahoro-Esiele community of Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State.

The assailants invaded the community and abducted several pupils, teachers and the principal of a secondary school, raising fresh concerns over the country’s security situation and the government’s efforts to curb kidnapping and other violent crimes.

The incident took a tragic turn a few days later when one of the abducted teachers, Michael Oyedokun, was reportedly beheaded by the kidnappers while in captivity, further heightening public outrage over the attack.

The release of the remaining victims followed weeks of sustained rescue efforts by security agencies, bringing relief to their families, the affected communities and the Oyo State Government.
