The operation began after officers spotted a stolen Toyota Vitz at a Shell petrol station along Thika Road in Juja. Rather than comply with police, the driver reportedly floored the accelerator and sped away, setting off a pursuit that would cover several kilometres before it came to a deadly conclusion.

In a bid to bring the vehicle to a stop, officers allegedly opened fire on the car’s tyres. Witnesses on the scene said the move did little to halt the driver immediately, with Kimani reportedly continuing to drive on the bare rims for close to three kilometres before the chase finally ended near Muigai Inn in the Juja Farm area.

A shootout with police followed, during which Kimani was fatally wounded.

Beyond the stolen Vitz, authorities say Kimani had already been placed on a watchlist as part of a broader investigation into an organised vehicle theft network.

The probe is being conducted under a multi-agency task force, and police indicated that the deceased was considered a person of interest in several ongoing cases tied to the syndicate.

His death has now revealed what investigators allege was the identity of a suspect long sought in connection with multiple car theft incidents across the region.

Kenyans react to incident

Eveleen Mitei,MBS said: “Crime must be addressed firmly within the framework of the law. Every incident involving the use of force deserves transparency and accountability to maintain public confidence in our security institutions.”

Haron Ask Ask said: “Police should learn to handle theft, not a matter of chasing a thief until what they want to save is destroyed. Now, what is the purpose of chasing the thief and ending up destroying the car?”

Li Na said: My concern with this thief is ‘how do you die for a vitz? Which if you work a bit hard along the way, you can get these things. I think thieves should be mentally evaluated instead of being killed. There seems to be a problem; others are shot for stealing mobile phones. The government needs to help these boys to secure a better future.

Elsewhere, TUKO also highlighted facts about the recent arrest of Sylvester Mwangi, a Kenyan suspect linked to a series of cross-border car thefts, which has prompted calls for victims to report incidents to local law enforcement.
