Manchester United have completed the signing of Belgian midfielder Youri Tielemans from Aston Villa after activating his €41 million release clause, following the collapse of their proposed move for Atalanta midfielder Éderson.
Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano confirmed the deal in a post on X on Monday.
Romano wrote: “HERE WE GO! MAN UNITED PAY €41M RELEASE CLAUSE AND SIGN YOURI TIELEMANS.”
“Surprise deal completed for the Belgian midfielder by paying €41M release clause to Aston Villa — personal terms agreed.
“Tielemans says yes to Manchester United project and will be second midfield signing after Andrey Santos; Éderson, OFF. BIG BOMBA FOR UNITED.”
According to reports, United moved swiftly for the 29-year-old after abandoning plans to sign Éderson following complications during the Brazilian midfielder’s medical.
Rather than negotiate with Aston Villa, the Premier League club triggered the €41 million release clause in Tielemans’ contract to complete the transfer.
The Belgian international becomes United’s second major midfield signing of the transfer window after reaching an agreement to sign Andrey Santos from Chelsea.
Tielemans is expected to strengthen Michael Carrick’s midfield options as United continue rebuilding their squad ahead of the new season.
Meanwhile, Aston Villa are reportedly close to securing a replacement, with the club said to be finalising a club-record £52 million move for Swiss midfielder Johan Manzambi from Freiburg following Tielemans’ departure and Amadou Onana’s long-term ACL injury.
