The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has announced plans to blacklist employers who fail to provide accommodation and transportation for corps members posted to their organisations, as part of efforts to improve the welfare and safety of serving graduates across Nigeria.
The Director-General of the NYSC, Brigadier General Olakunle Nafiu, disclosed this while addressing corps members during an official engagement. He stressed that employers benefiting from the services of corps members must fulfil their welfare obligations as required by the NYSC Act and operational guidelines.
According to Nafiu, organisations that fail to provide suitable accommodation or transportation support for corps members will no longer be eligible to receive NYSC members for primary assignments.
He explained that the scheme remains committed to ensuring that corps members serve in safe and conducive environments, adding that employers have a responsibility to support the well-being of the young graduates entrusted to them.
The NYSC boss also urged corps members to remain disciplined and uphold the core values of the scheme throughout their service year. He encouraged them to actively participate in the Skills Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development (SAED) programme, describing it as a valuable opportunity to acquire practical skills for self-employment and financial independence.
Nafiu further advised corps members to cultivate a savings culture to help them prepare for life after the service year. He noted that prudent financial management would enable them to pursue entrepreneurial ventures or other career opportunities upon completing the programme.
On security, the Director-General urged corps members to remain vigilant and immediately report any security threats or suspicious activities to the appropriate authorities and NYSC officials. He reassured them that the scheme places a high priority on their safety and would continue working with security agencies to ensure a secure service environment.
