Operatives of the Rapid Response Squad (RRS), Awkuzu, have foiled a suspected kidnap plot, rescued a victim, and arrested a 66-year-old man, Kenneth Nnaji, over his alleged involvement in a criminal syndicate specialising in obtaining money under false pretences.
The Anambra State Police Command disclosed that the operation was carried out on the evening of July 11, 2026, in Awka.
According to the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, preliminary investigations revealed that the suspect allegedly belongs to a three-man criminal syndicate known for defrauding unsuspecting members of the public through elaborate deception across Anambra and Enugu states.
During interrogation, Nnaji allegedly confessed to his involvement in the criminal enterprise and provided investigators with useful information on the group’s mode of operation.
Police said members of the syndicate disguise themselves in branded overalls and caps while posing as representatives of reputable companies. They allegedly approach prospective victims to obtain goods under the pretext of collecting product samples before directing them to another location, claiming that larger quantities of the goods are available at heavily discounted prices. Victims are then allegedly defrauded through the scheme.
The suspect reportedly identified other members of the syndicate as Christopher (surname yet to be ascertained), Jacob Musa, and Joseph (surname yet to be ascertained), who are currently on the run.
The Police Command said efforts are ongoing to arrest the fleeing suspects and dismantle the criminal network.
Reacting to the development, the Commissioner of Police in Anambra State, CP Ikioye Orutugu, urged members of the public to remain vigilant and verify the identities and credentials of individuals claiming to represent companies before entering into any business transactions.
He also directed the investigating team to carry out a comprehensive investigation, ensure the arrest of all fleeing suspects, recover the proceeds of the alleged fraud, and prosecute everyone found culpable in accordance with the law.
The police said the suspect will be charged to court upon the conclusion of investigations.
