The Anambra State Government has launched the Voluntary Assets, Income Declaration and Tax Regularisation Scheme, VAIDS, offering taxpayers a limited window to regularise their tax records without paying full penalties and interest for non-compliance.
The scheme, which commenced on July 6, 2026, will run until September 5, 2026.
It is open to individuals, businesses, companies and other organisations with outstanding tax obligations in the state.
The Commissioner for Information and Value Reformation, Dr Law Mefor, said the initiative is designed to encourage voluntary tax compliance by allowing eligible taxpayers to declare previously undisclosed income, assets and tax liabilities.
According to him, the scheme covers unregistered taxpayers, registered taxpayers with additional income, assets or liabilities to declare, and persons or organisations that underreported taxable income or assets.
It also applies to taxpayers who underpaid or under-remitted taxes and levies, those currently undergoing tax audits or investigations, persons involved in disputes with the Anambra State Internal Revenue Service, AIRS, and recipients of Best of Judgment, BOJ, assessments who failed to respond within the stipulated period.
Mefor said taxpayers who make full and honest disclosures under the scheme will enjoy a 100 per cent waiver of penalties, 100 per cent waiver of accrued interest and immunity from prosecution for disclosed tax liabilities.
He added that eligible participants will also be protected from tax audits for the declared periods and may access flexible payment arrangements, subject to approval by AIRS.
The Executive Chairman of AIRS, Ikeazor Okonkwo, urged individuals with undeclared income or assets, business owners, companies, partnerships, sole proprietors, taxpayers with outstanding liabilities and unregistered taxpayers to take advantage of the scheme before the deadline.
Okonkwo said the scheme provides a rare opportunity for taxpayers to regularise their records and avoid the heavier consequences of enforcement after the grace period.
He warned that AIRS would begin full enforcement against defaulting taxpayers after the scheme expires on September 5, 2026.
The state government said the initiative is part of efforts to expand the tax net, improve voluntary compliance, reduce disputes and strengthen internally generated revenue without immediately resorting to punitive enforcement.
Taxpayers covered by the scheme are expected to approach AIRS within the two-month window, make honest disclosures and agree on settlement terms where necessary.
The government maintained that those who fail to take advantage of the waiver period may face penalties, interest, audits, investigations and prosecution after the deadline.
