FIFA has unveiled a 12-group format for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which will kick off on Thursday, June 11, with host nation Mexico facing South Africa in the opening match at the iconic Mexico City.
NOP NIGERIA reports that the tournament, co-hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico, marks a historic expansion as it becomes the first edition to feature 48 teams.
The expanded format is expected to increase the number of matches and give more nations the opportunity to compete on football’s biggest stage.
The group stage matches will be played across multiple cities in the three host countries, highlighting the first tri-nation hosting arrangement in World Cup history.
The group stage of the competition will run throughout June, with teams battling for qualification into the knockout rounds.
With 12 groups in place, only the top teams, alongside the best-performing runners-up, will advance to the next phase of the tournament.
Following the conclusion of the group stage, the tournament will progress into the knockout rounds, where the intensity is expected to rise as teams compete for a place in the final.
The expanded structure is anticipated to bring more excitement, unpredictability, and global representation.
Groups Confirmed After Play-offs
The 12 groups for the tournament were finalised after the conclusion of the European and inter-continental play-offs, completing the lineup for what is expected to be one of the most inclusive World Cups in history.
