The Enugu state government Tuesday suspended with immediate effect the collection of tolls from petty traders.

As a result, a taskforce has been set up to ensure that the government directive to suspend the daily toll of N200 from pure water sellers, vegetable sellers, hawkers  be stopped forthwith.

The Secretary to the Enugu State Government (SSG), Prof. Chidiebere Onyia, who announced this at a stakeholders meeting at the Old Government Lodge, Enugu, Tuesday said government received complaints from traditional rulers, local government chairmen and president generals about the negative effect the tolls were having on the poor traders.

Onyia added that following the outcry of citizens, government had no option but to suspend the tolls.

“The revenue in our markets has generated much attention and the governor has given immediate directive for the implementation.  A taskforce is going to be set up at the local government levels.  Market tolls refer to tolls that are collected from traders without lock-up shops. This is N200 per day.

“The governor has directed that in line with Enugu state Tax Law, those tolls have been suspended with immediate effect . We have heard complaints from the Igwe’s, from the local government  mayors and president generals and the governor suspended it,” he said.
