Lagos residents were gripped by fear weekend as deadly shooting in Surulere coincided with a wave of panic triggered by a viral rumour of an impending cult clash across several parts of the state.
The Lagos state Police command confirmed the killing of Adedipe Adeyinka, popularly known as “Agali,” who was shot dead by yet-to-be-identified gunmen at about 11:30 p.m. near the National Stadium Bridge inward Iponri.
The late-night attack, which occurred in a usually busy corridor known for its nightlife and heavy traffic, sent shockwaves through the area as gunfire forced commuters and residents to flee for safety.
Eyewitnesses described a sudden and chaotic scene.
“We just heard gunshots and people started running in different directions. At first, nobody knew what was happening. It was terrifying,” a resident around the National Stadium axis said.
Another witness said the victim was quickly evacuated from the scene by bystanders before emergency responders arrived. Police later confirmed that Adeyinka was rushed to Mainland General Hospital, Yaba, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
Security sources stated that the attackers fled immediately after the shooting, prompting the deployment of tactical teams to the area to gather intelligence and track down those responsible. The command has since launched a manhunt, assuring that no effort will be spared in bringing the perpetrators to justice.
“We are aware of the report. Investigation is ongoing and tactical teams have been deployed. Further updates will be communicated,” the police said in an official statement.
