Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde has commenced preparations that will lead to the emergence of his successor ahead of the 2027 governorship election.
NOP NIGERIA reports that the governor made this known in his April 2026 newsletter titled “The Business of Governance,” where he explained that his administration has already started consulting with selected individuals as part of a planned transition process.
He said the aim is to arrive at a decision that will sustain the progress recorded in the state and guide its future direction.
He added that the final outcome would be made public at the right time.
Earlier, on March 21, 2026, Makinde had directed an advisory council to interact with governorship aspirants within the Peoples Democratic Party.
The council, led by Senior Advocate of Nigeria Bolaji Ayorinde, was asked to meet with the aspirants and suggest a suitable candidate who would continue the administration’s agenda under what is known as Omituntun 3.0.
The move was designed to give all interested aspirants a fair chance to present their ideas and plans.
Among those who showed interest in the race are a member of the House of Representatives, Adedeji Olajide; Chairman of the State Universal Basic Education Board, Nureni Adeniran; former Commissioner for Finance, Bimbo Adekanmbi; Chairman of the Agribusiness Development Agency, Debo Akande; and the Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Adebo Ogundoyin, along with others.
Makinde noted that residents of the state are closely following developments as the transition period approaches, with many eager to know what lies ahead in terms of leadership and continuity.
Although he did not give a specific date for announcing the candidate, he had earlier indicated that the party’s flagbearer would likely emerge through a consensus arrangement expected around April 8.
