According to Obasanjo, the late leader moved around .... with little to no protection—often driving himself without motorcades, sirens, or heavy security. This, he said, stemmed from a naive belief that no harm would come to a man serving his nation selflessly.
“Murtala would not have been killed the way he was killed if not for our naivety,” Obasanjo confessed.
He revealed that he had personally advised Muhammed on security matters, but the advice was not fully implemented. The leadership at the time simply could not imagine a coordinated attack against the Head of State.
