Abia 2027: PDP clears Appolos, 17 others for assembly contest

The Peoples Democratic Party, (PDP) has cleared former Chief Press Secretary to former Governor Okezie Ikpeazu, Enyinnaya Appolos, and 17 other aspirants to participate in the party’s State House of Assembly primary election slated for May 22, 2025 ahead of the 2027 general election.

The media strategist and grassroots mobiliser emerged as the sole PDP aspirant for the Obingwa West State Constituency seat.

This is a development party stakeholders say reflects growing acceptance of his candidacy across the constituency.

A PDP stakeholder from Obingwa, Elder Ihuoma Ebere, described Appolos as a widely accepted candidate across political divides.

Ebere said: “Enyinnaya Appolos is the candidate of Obingwa West across party lines.

“He is eminently qualified to represent our people and has what it takes to deliver quality representation in the Abia State House of Assembly.

“We are happy he has been cleared.”

The PDP State House of Assembly Screening Committee headed by Chief Obinna Nwachukwu screened and cleared all aspirants seeking the party’s tickets across various constituencies in Abia State.

Party insiders described the exercise as peaceful, transparent, and in line with the PDP’s constitution and electoral guidelines, stressing that the PDP was focused on rebuilding and strengthening its structures ahead of future elections.

For Appolos, the clearance marks a significant step in his transition from journalism and media management into active legislative politics.

A former Political and Legislative Correspondent, he later served in the administration of former Governor Ikpeazu as Chief Press Secretary and Special Adviser on Media.

Political observers in Obingwa say his emergence as sole aspirant is tied to his longstanding relationship with grassroots leaders, youth groups, party faithful, and community stakeholders.

Supporters believe his background in governance, media, and public affairs positions him to provide effective representation and stronger legislative engagement for the constituency.

The development is seen as part of broader efforts by the PDP to reposition itself in Abia State following the political shifts that emerged after the 2023 elections.

With no opposition within the PDP for the Obingwa West ticket, attention is now turning to Appolos’ broader campaign strategy ahead of the 2027 contest.
