Amazon delivery driver saves woman whose husband allegedly tried to beat her to death over reduced Social Security payments

An Amazon delivery driver saved a woman’s life when he confronted a 72-year-old man who was allegedly attacking his wife with a hammer inside their Minnesota home.

Authorities say the driver had been dropping off a package at the couple’s Chisago County home in the city of Wyoming, Minnesota, on May 11, when he heard screaming coming from inside the house, according to a criminal complaint obtained by CBS News.

The driver told investigators that when he looked inside, he saw a woman covered in blood and a man holding a hammer. He then rushed into the home and ordered the man to drop the weapon before calling 911.

When deputies arrived, they found the Amazon driver inside the house with the victim, who was bleeding heavily from her head, arms and hands.

James Alan Johnson, 72, was taken into custody at the scene. He reportedly admitted that his business was nearing financial collapse and that he wanted to kill his wife so that she would not have to “deal with” living off significantly reduced Social Security benefits, according to the complaint.

Investigators claim Johnson planned to knock his wife unconscious before killing her.

The victim told police she was hit twice on the head with a hammer and managed to fight off her attacker by hitting him in the groin.

Investigators said the woman suffered two large, bloody indentations to her head that were consistent with being struck multiple times with a hammer, according to police reports via KSTP.

Johnson has been charged with first-degree attempted murder and second-degree assault with a dangerous weapon. He is being held at the Chisago County Jail on a $1 million bond.
