Liverpool have parted ways with head coach Arne Slot following an end-of-season review after a disappointing 2025/26 campaign.
The Premier League club confirmed both parties agreed to end the relationship with immediate effect after discussions involving the club’s hierarchy.
Slot leaves Anfield less than two years after arriving from Feyenoord in June 2024.
His departure comes a season after guiding Liverpool to their 20th English league title in his first campaign.
He also led the club to the Carabao Cup final and the Champions League last 16, earning the LMA Manager of the Year award.
However, Liverpool failed to build on that success in 2025/26, finishing fifth in the Premier League and ending the season without silverware.
The Reds still qualified for the Champions League for a second consecutive season and reached the quarter-finals of the competition, but the club opted for a managerial change.
In a joint statement on Saturday, Liverpool’s ownership said: “This was a difficult decision for us to make as a club goes without saying.
“The contribution Arne has made to Liverpool FC in the time that he has been with us has been significant, meaningful and – most importantly of all to supporters and ourselves – successful.”
Explaining the decision, the statement said: “At the same time, we have collectively come to the conclusion that change is necessary in order for the club to keep moving forward.”
Liverpool also paid tribute to Slot’s achievements, saying: “We would like to take this opportunity to place on record our appreciation for Arne, who will always hold a special place in the history of this football club as the coach who delivered Liverpool’s 20th league title.
“Arne leaves with our gratitude, with a Premier League title to his name, and with the knowledge that he and his family will always be welcomed back at Anfield.”
Attention has already turned to finding a replacement.
Former Bournemouth manager Andoni Iraola has emerged as the leading candidate for the position after guiding the south-coast club to a sixth-place finish and UEFA Europa League qualification.
Liverpool are expected to move quickly as preparations begin for the new season, with discussions set to cover the managerial appointment, structural changes and plans for the upcoming transfer window.
