Aisha Yesufu, a frontrunner for the Federal Capital Territory senatorial seat under the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), has projected a major political shift ahead of the 2027 general elections, expressing confidence that her party is on course to take over national leadership.…....
The human rights activist turned politician said the political landscape is changing rapidly and insisted that the NDC would emerge as the dominant force in the next election cycle.
According to a video posted on the Official YouTube channel of Arise News on Monday, May 25, 2026, Yesufu dismissed concerns about possible friction with current political leaders in the Federal Capital Territory, stressing that political alignments would soon be reshaped by electoral outcomes. She stated, “in 2027, the FCT Minister and I will be in the same party because the Nigeria Democratic Congress will be the ruling party.” She added that her confidence is based on what she described as growing public dissatisfaction and increasing support for alternative political voices across the country.
Yesufu explained that her entry into partisan politics is driven primarily by the need to improve governance and ensure that citizens are properly represented at all levels.
She noted that many residents of the FCT continue to face structural and infrastructural challenges that require urgent attention, and argued that effective representation in the Senate would help bridge the gap between government policies and everyday realities. According to her, her ambition is not rooted in personal rivalry or political hostility, but in a desire to ensure accountability and responsive leadership.
She further emphasized that her campaign is focused on issue-based engagement rather than personality clashes with existing office holders. “I am not coming into this race to fight anyone,” she said in essence, adding that the goal is to bring governance closer to the people and ensure that their concerns are adequately addressed through legislative action and oversight.
Yesufu also projected confidence in the growth of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, stating that the party is steadily gaining support among voters who are dissatisfied with the current political order.
She argued that political awareness among citizens is increasing, especially among young people and civil society actors who are demanding greater transparency, inclusion, and accountability in governance. She maintained that this growing awareness would translate into electoral success for her party in 2027.
She reiterated her belief that the coming election would mark a turning point in Nigeria’s political direction, as voters increasingly look beyond traditional party structures. In her view, the electorate is becoming more open to new political alternatives that promise reform and improved governance outcomes.
