Matthew Kukah, the Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Sokoto, has stated that when former Nigerian Head of State Yakubu Gowon was overthrown in 1975, Idi Amin who was president of Uganda supported him
In a video shared by NTA, Kukah said Gowon was in Kampala, Uganda, when news came that he had been removed from power in Nigeria. He said Idi Amin wanted to send Ugandan troops to help Gowon reclaim power in Nigeria but Gowon rejected the idea
Kukah stated that Idi Amin later gave Gowon 10,000 dollars to support him. He said Gowon then left Uganda and moved to Togo with the support of former Togolese president Gnassingbé Eyadéma
