The Edo State Government has distributed free sanitary pads to schoolgirls in Benin City as part of activities commemorating the 2026 World Menstrual Hygiene Day.
The initiative, which focused on promoting menstrual health awareness and improving access to hygiene products for young girls, was held at Emotan College in Benin City on Wednesday.
The programme was organised through the Office of the Special Adviser to the Governor on Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and attracted students, teachers, healthcare advocates, and government officials.
Speaking during the event, the Special Adviser on SDGs, Sally Suleiman, stressed the importance of menstrual hygiene management and the need to support girls during their menstrual cycles.
According to her, many young girls still face challenges accessing sanitary products, leading to embarrassment, poor hygiene, and absenteeism from school.
She explained that the state government remains committed to protecting the dignity, health, and educational future of girls across Edo State.
No girl should be forced to miss school because she cannot afford sanitary pads, she said.
Suleiman noted that the initiative aligns with the Sustainable Development Goals on good health, quality education, and gender equality, adding that the government would continue to support programmes that empower women and girls.
The event also featured awareness sessions where students were educated on proper menstrual hygiene practices, personal health, and the importance of self-confidence during adolescence.
Beneficiaries expressed appreciation to the Edo State Government for the support, describing the gesture as timely and helpful amid rising economic challenges.
World Menstrual Hygiene Day is observed annually on May 28 to raise awareness about menstrual health and advocate for access to affordable sanitary products and proper hygiene facilities for women and girls worldwide.
