Nigeria’s First Lady, Oluremi Tinubu, has called for stronger collaboration among governments, private institutions, civil society groups and communities to address inequalities affecting families and child development across the country.

In a message released on Friday, 15 May, 2026 to commemorate the 2026 International Day of Families, the First Lady aligned Nigeria with the global observance of the annual event marked every May 15, stressing the importance of family stability in nation-building and the wellbeing of children.

Speaking on the theme, “Families, Inequalities and Child Wellbeing,” Mrs Tinubu said the commemoration draws attention to the widening social and economic disparities confronting families worldwide and the direct impact such inequalities have on children.

She stated that the wellbeing of every child is closely tied to the strength, security and support available within the family structure, noting that stable homes remain the foundation for responsible citizenship and sustainable societal growth.

“On this International Day of Families 2026, I join the global community in recognizing the central role families play in shaping our societies and nurturing the next generation,” she said.

The First Lady further explained that the 2026 theme highlights “the growing disparities that affect family stability and the development of our children,” adding that it serves as a reminder that child wellbeing cannot be separated from the conditions under which families live and thrive.

She therefore urged stakeholders across different sectors to intensify efforts toward policies and programmes that promote inclusion, fairness and long-term development for families.

“As we mark this important day, I call on all stakeholders, including both public and private sector, civil society, and communities, to work together in advancing family-centered initiatives that promote inclusion, equity, and sustainable development,” she stated.

Mrs Tinubu also emphasized the need for collective commitment toward building stronger family systems capable of providing children with love, moral values and opportunities for prosperity.

“Let us remain committed to building stronger families and a more just society, where no child is left behind and every home becomes a foundation of love, values and prosperity,” she added.

She concluded the message by extending goodwill to families across Nigeria and the international community, saying, “Happy International Day of Families.”
